Specialties

ElectricityEneSolve understands that the cost of energy and the impact fossil fuel based energy sources are having on the environment are core issues for our clients. Importantly, we also understand that our clients are running large, complex infrastructure requiring the orchestration of several layers of expertise to uncover cost saving opportunities that don't disrupt vital production processes.

Addressing these complex challenges, eneSolve has developed a set of specialty services unmatched in the Australian marketplace. To achieve this we have brought together Australia's leading specialists across a diverse range of consulting and contracting disciplines to deliver our clients holistic energy efficiency solutions - satisfying both their regulatory compliance obligations and their requirement for profitable outcomes.

Regulatory Compliance

Many of our clients are required to comply with one or more pieces of legislation out of a complex suite of laws, both at the Commonwealth and State level. These laws address three areas that are inter-related:

  • Energy consumption/efficiency
  • Carbon
  • Water consumption/efficiency

Generally the individual instruments have been crafted for a specific purpose, to a greater or lesser extent in isolation of other laws, both on a State-to-State level or Commonwealth-to-State. Hence, many overlaps and, at times, even conflicts exist across the legislation landscape. It requires knowledge, skill and experience to navigate through this mix of requirements so that full compliance is achieved with minimum duplication and at minimum cost.

Enesolve’s team has the skill and experience to turn-key compliance across the full suite of Federal and State legislative frameworks including:

  • National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER Act, Federal)
  • Energy Efficiency Opportunities Act 2006 (EEO Act, Federal)
  • Environment and Resource Efficiency Plans (EREP, State: VIC)
  • Smart Energy Saving Program (Queensland)
  • Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority Program (NZ)

Energy Consumption Auditing & Benchmarking

In order to ensure that the outcomes of Energy Audit processes are relevant and valuable, we take the time to gain an understanding of our clients' business operations, strategy and investment plans.

We typically request energy and production data that is in sufficient detail to allow the identification of seasonal patterns, longer-term trends and other key factors impacting performance of the subject facility. To assist the client in compiling this information, Enesolve provides a comprehensive information request that steps through all required elements.

Prior to engaging on site, Enesolve analyses the supplied data utilising disciplines such as trend analysis and correlation analysis. We also research locally and internationally for energy consumption data of like businesses, to assist in the definition of operational benchmarks.

The site investigation has a number of objectives:

  • Observation of all energy-consuming plant, appliances and systems
  • Collection of more detailed data
  • Comparisons with findings from prior analyses
  • Derive useful conclusions with respect to plant energy consumption to assist with potential effiiencies analysis e.g. an Energy End-Use Breakdown (EUB)

The EUB helps focus our team on the most fruitful areas for deeper investigations, leading to the definition of Energy Efficiency Measures (EEM).

The outcome of this process is an incisive Energy Audit Report.

Demand-Side Strategic Planning

Demand-side strategic planning comprises two core steps:

  • Energy Efficiency Opportunities Identification
  • Development of an Energy Efficiency Plan

Energy Efficiency Opportunities Identification

Leveraging the End Use Breakdown (EUB) derived during the auditing phase, eneSolve's technical specialists then "brainstorm" a set of prima facie feasible project options ranging from simple behavioural changes (no capital expenditure required) through to more complex projects involving changes to plant, equipment and controls.

EneSolve's technical team has both great depth and breadth - essential for quickly uncovering the most promising and sustainable opportunities. Our skill sets include:

  • Combustion (all fuels, especially boiler and furnace applications)
  • Thermal systems  (including heat exchangers)
  • Refrigeration
  • Heating ventilation and cooling (HVAC)
  • Electrical Infrastructure, including:
    • Power factor correction
    • Switchboard resistance
    • harmonics
    • metering
    • switching
    • controls
  • Compressed air
  • Steam
  • Lighting
  • Controls
  • Water Conservation (inextricably linked to energy consumption in industrial processes)

Development of an Energy Efficiency Plan

Having identified a range of feasible energy efficiency opportunities, we then apply our client's boundary conditions, such as:

  • Investment parameters - available capital, pay-back requirements...
  • Taxation implications - depreciation methodologies...; and
  • Legal obligations - compliance standards; reporting requirements...

to the task of both integrating and optimising an Energy Efficiency Plan ("Plan").

 Integration

Quality efficiency solutions often require the integration of otherwise separate pieces of plant and/or systems in order to deliver the best outcome for clients. Examples include:

  • Thermal Systems (heating/cooling)
  • Co-generation
  • Tri-generation
  • Separation/decentralisation

EneSolve has expertise across all of these areas with specialist skills in all associated system components e.g. heat exchangers.

Optimisation

Utilising the eneSolve CSP (Carbon Strategy Platform), we systematically rank each energy efficiency opportunity based on its Net Present Value (NPV) against the client's required peformance parameters.

Subject to the operation of an Emissions Trading Framework, qualified energy efficiency measures are also compared with the purchase of approved carbon off-set mechanisms to derive the most cost effective overall solution for clients. This results in the development of a Carbon Abatement Cost Curve which can be iterated based on future carbon price forecasts/sensitivities.

When Optimisation is complete, clients have a fully costed Plan and an implementation rationale which can be incorporated into regular budget planning practices. This ensures that all layers of management from Production and Sustainability through to Finance and Administration have a clear understanding of the Plan and its implications.

Space Heating, Ventilation & Cooling

Enesolve has gathered together the leaders in the field of analysis and assessment of energy efficiency in air-conditioning, heating and cooling technologies.

From first principles we develop a detailed model of energy demands and use this to build, optimise and integrate solutions encompassing revised controls, recommissioned and new plant that delivers substantial and reliable savings.

Quality is assured and underwritten by our unparalleled knowledge of the efficiency characteristics of a very wide range of plant and equipment.

Controls

Rapidly advancing technology, the consolidation of control systems contractors & suppliers, and a shortage of available expertise, have all led to gaps in the controls market between designers, systems contractors and end-users.

EneSolve fills these gaps by providing high-level technical expertise in controls technology with a particular focus on the reduction of energy consumption and operating costs for clients.

Traditionally control system implementation has been limited to standard commissioning methodologies as set out in vendor manual documentation. Our team of specialists develop control methodologies from first principles and instruct control system vendors on how to configure systems from an energy efficiency perspective.

This capability is unique to eneSolve and provides our clients with unmatched opportunities for cost savings.

Importantly, eneSolve has no vendor loyalties or biases, and therefore offers a full range of design, commissioning and maintenance services – without the normal conflicts of interest which arise from being tied to a particular product range or system philosophy.

Embedded Generation & Renewables

Embedded Generation, Cogeneration and Tri-generation

EneSolve undertakes fundamental, vendor independent assessments through to full turnkey operation and maintenance of cost effective solutions - all implemented within current standards utilising state-of-the-art technologies.

Successful embedded generation is derived from an holistic understanding of the site's energy consuming infrastructure, not as a stand-alone “project”.

Our specialist team has won multiple project awards in this field.

Renewable Energy Generation

We have a broad understanding of a number of innovative forms of energy supply such as photovoltaics, solar thermal, wind, biomass and biofuels - all of which complement the sustainable options provided through our multi-disciplinary, integrated engineering approach.

Lighting

Lighting is often perceived as the “easy fix” area of energy consumption. History demonstrates that many “easy fixes” have been implemented but the outcomes have been sub-optimal. Lighting is a complex science. A series of interacting factors must be addressed to achieve high illumination quality. Safety and duty of care are important considerations as is the need to maintain occupant productivity - a key issue that is often compromised by ill-considered lighting changes.

Industrial lighting is usually complex, involving many different types of fittings (we have experienced up to 60 fitting types on one site). Whilst as a percentage of overall energy consumption, industrial lighting is a relatively small percentage, eneSolve recommends including it in the energy efficiency program as the savings available can be very significant.

Our team approaches each opportunity as a unique challenge. Through a structured approach to data gathering and analysis, lighting upgrade solutions are developed in response to the existing lighting infrastructure, illumination requirements and site conditions rather than trying to force a "one size fits all" solution.

As a guiding principle we prefer not  to replace existing lightings systems but  look to reuse existing lighting components wherever possible. This delivers teh smartest and most cost effective outcomes.

Upgrade solutions may involve:

  • reducing illumination power density
  • reducing run times through control systems
  • a combination of the two

Each option considered will involve trade-offs between:

  • efficiency
  • reliability
  • usability
  • initial and operating cost

The recommended solution will balance these constraints with client preferences.
